Father's Day!

In Australia, its Father's Day today!

So Happy Father's Day to all the Fathers out there.

It is something that I have been slowly realising lately, that Father's really don't take their responsibilities as Fathers very seriously. Of course there are some excellent fathers who really try to do their best, but most of us fall over in so many ways.

I was reading through today's chapter of Proverbs, and it reflects so heavily on Ephesians 6:1-10.

For instance Proverbs 4:10  "Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many." sounds so much like Ephesians 6:1-3 "1Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. 2Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) 3That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth."

And there is so much in the Bible that speaks to Dad's about their children.
Reading through Proverbs it even occurred to me that the overwhelming majority of Proverbs is written by a Dad to his Son. In fact if you look through you find very little written to Mum's about teaching their children, and  guiding them in the ways of the Lord - it is mostly to Dad's or to parents together.
Yet in our world today it is the Mum's who do all that stuff - the Dad goes to work and earns the money and the Mum teaches the kids everything from manners onwards. And especially it is considered "women's business" to teach the kids about 'religion and God'. (And now that many Mum's work as well, they still have to do the kid stuff anyway!)

That is totally the opposite to what the Bible says. It is the Father who is commissioned with leading, teaching, and discipling the children - the Mum should assist and help, but it is his responsibility.

I hope our Fathers have a good day today, but I really hope they see the need of their position - and teach their children in the ways of the Lord.

Skelli.
